Eldon “Hub” Erickson, 85, passed away Monday, June 4, 2012.
He was born the second of four children to Joe and Myrla Erickson in Eau Claire on July 26, 1926. He joined the Navy after graduating from high school and served honorably as a radio operator on an escort carrier, the U.S.S. Suwanee, in the South Pacific. His ship participated in many battles, the most notable of which was the Battle of Leyte Gulf, when the carrier was hit by a kamikaze.
When the war was over Hub attended college on the G.I. Bill and graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. While at Concordia, he was a member of the world-renowned Concordia Choir and toured Norway in 1949. Later that year he married Joanne Knutson, of Chetek, who would be his wife for the next 63 years. The following year they had the first of three children.
Hub’s long career with the railroad took him from Wisconsin to Minnesota to Washington and, finally, to California. He and Joanne moved the family to Concord in 1969, and after the kids all left home, they retired and moved to Rossmoor in Walnut Creek in 1985.
He is survived by his wife Joanne; two sisters, Arlene and Geraldine; children Joe, Dan (Mary) and Patty; and two grandsons, Michael and Matthew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his younger brother, Robert; and his grandson, Richard.
Memorial gifts can be made in Hub’s name to the Rossmoor Fund, P.O. Box 2070, Walnut Creek, CA 94595 or online at RossmoorFund.org.
All monies will be used to assist those in crisis for groceries, medical expenses, etc.
