A 34-year-old Cameron man who was already a defendant in a sex assault case was sentenced to two years in prison Friday, Nov. 6, on a felony charge of failing to register as a sex offender for the second and/or subsequent time.

Darren R. Thibedeau, of Cameron, will also serve two years’ extended supervision after his release, court records said.

A complaint filed in July 2019 alleged Thibedeau sexually assaulted a woman at a Rice Lake apartment.

Another complaint filed Jan. 22 accused Thibedeau of failing to notify the state’s sex offender registry office of a change in his home address on two occasions within the past 18 months.

The complaint said Thibedeau had been convicted of third-degree sex assault in Chippewa County in 2015 and was required to keep state authorities aware of his whereabouts.

A felony charge of second-degree sex assault, filed in connection with the July 2019 incident, was later reduced to a misdemeanor count of fourth-degree sex assault in a deal with prosecutors, court records said.
