The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department received a call at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 that a residence located at 9100 County AA in the town of Bloomer was fully engulfed and requesting the fire department to respond.

Local fire departments fought the fire for a number of hours and contained it. The bitter cold was a factor in controlling the fire.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, investigating the fire, learned that Dale M. Channing, 67, lived at the residence alone and was more than likely in the house when it caught fire. The sheriff’s department, assisted by the State Fire Marshal, removed a body from the house. Further investigation will be conducted to identify the body, suspected as being Channing. Additional follow up investigation will attempt to determine the cause of the fire.

Sheriff James Kowalczyk said via email on Sunday, Feb. 3 that positive identification had been determined. The cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Anyone that may have any information in regard to the fire is asked to call the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department at 715-726-4568.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, Bloomer and New Auburn fire departments and State Fire Marshal responded to the scene.
