Guest article By Dagmar BeckelÂ
It is hard enough to get a teenager to do their required school work, but imagine a group of teenagers spending their summer working on a project that is not required! With admirable self-motivation, Dagmar Beckel, Casey Haugen, and Peter Wise decided to pursue the Congressional App Challenge Competition. (https://www.congressionalappchallenge.us/)
Their discipline was enviable. They started the project at the end of May and diligently met every week all summer long to program a new mobile application.
The app was ready by the submission deadline on November 1. The team was able to take an original idea and build a game around it, complete with multiple levels and a friendly user interface. The app is called “Campaign Simulator” and simulates the experience of going up the political ladder in an entertaining way.
Much like a real political experience, it is broken into three sections: local, state, and federal.
Each section in the game is represented by a level of increasing difficulty. In each level, the player can run for a number of offices. Each office features different responsibilities and options for both fundraising and improving public opinion. The goal is to get elected into each office until you can run for the Office of the President.
Throughout the project, the students displayed great teamwork, carefully weighing out their options for ideas, and working through scheduling difficulties as well as technical challenges. As part of this project, they learned not only a new programming language but also how to use a new coding platform.
While the competition results won’t be announced until December, with Dagmar and Casey being just in their freshman year in high school, and Peter in his sophomore year, we already know, we can expect great things from these three Chetek-Weyerhaeuser students.
