A fire in a residence belonging to a family of five was reported early Tuesday morning, June 11, according to the Rice Lake Fire Department.

The fire was reported at 12:14 a.m. at 920 S. Main Street, Rice Lake. Firefighters arrived at the house three minutes later and saw smoking coming from the basement and out a back door.

All occupants were outside and a thermal imaging device was used to check if the fire was spreading to the rest of the house.

The RLFD said, due to reduced on-duty staffing, they could not enter the house for 17 minutes until more firefighters arrived. Once adequate staff was present, firefighters used two 1-3/4-inch attack lines to douse the fire in the basement.

The RLFD said the fire did not spread to the rest of the house, but there was smoke damage to the rest of the structure. The cause of the fire was under investigation by the fire department.

No one was injured, but the cost of damages had not yet been determined.

The American Red Cross said two adults and three children were provided medical and lodging aid after the fire.
