2017 Memorial Day flyover

Pictured above, vintage warplanes fly over the Memorial Day parade in Chetek on May 29, 2017. While there will not be an official parade this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, there will be observances and a flyover (weather permitting) at the Long Bridge at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25.

UPDATE: The start of the observances have been delayed due to the thunderstorm. It will start at 11:30 a.m. The flyover has cancelled due to the storms.

The Chetek Memorial Day parade has been canceled, but a similar, unofficial observance will take its place on Monday morning, May 25.

“We will be paying respects to our fallen comrades on Monday,” said Robert Lund with the Chetek AMVETS post.

Lund, members of the Chetek VFW and Dawn Anderson, commander of the Chetek American Legion, will walk from the Chetek Lutheran Church at 10:40 a.m. to the middle of the Long Bridge. There, they will throw wreaths into the water in memory of service members lost at sea. Vintage WWII-era warplanes will fly over the bridge at 10:50 a.m., weather permitting.

Any veteran who wishes to walk with them, not as a parade, is invited to meet them at the Chetek Lutheran Church to start the walk at 10:40 a.m.

Following the flyover, Lund and Anderson will walk to the Chetek Area Veterans Memorial, on the east end of the Long Bridge. There, they will say a prayer and raise the flags at the memorial.

There will be no honor guard, a 21-gun salute, marching band or parade in any official capacity. However, if people wish to walk with Lund and Anderson they may. Social distancing is encouraged.

A new batch of engraved memorial pavers have been installed at the CAVM, and Lund said from now on, they will be put in once a year before Memorial Day. The deadline will be April 1 each year.

People can order pavers to be engraved and placed at the memorial in honor or memory of a service member. Proceeds from the pavers help pay for ongoing improvements at the CAVM.

Forms to order pavers can be found at the Chetek VFW, Heidi’s Hair Care (formerly Bossany’s Barber Shop), The Chetek Alert, Barron County Veterans Service Office, Sterling Bank in Chetek, Chetek City Hall, The Center of Chetek and the city’s website at www.cityofchetek-wi.gov.

For questions or more information, call Darla Colvard, with the CAVM, at 715-859-2267. Forms and donations can be mailed to the CAVM at P.O. Box 23, Chetek, WI 54728.

Donations are also being accepted for the warplane flyover. Checks can be sent to the CAVM with “flyover” in the memo line.
