A 42-year-old Somerset man was injured during a skydiving accident in Chippewa County on Sunday, April 21, according to the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies and Chippewa Fire District and EMS personnel were called to the Bateman Airport in the town of Lafayette, Chippewa County, at 12:16 p.m. on Sunday.

"Based on the investigation, a male, later identified as Chad R. Pritchett, had parachuted near the Bateman Airport and deployed the main chute," said Lt. Rick Starck with the CCSO. "While descending, Pritchett’s secondary chute opened, tangling with the main chute. Pritchett descended at a faster rate of speed than normal striking the ground."

Starck said it was not known why the second chute had opened and that Pritchett was said to be an experienced parachutist and instructor.

The man was conscious after landing. He was airlifted by the Mayo 1 helicopter to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
