A Rice Lake man was a passenger on a train that was involved in a fatal collision with a car Saturday morning, Jan. 5.

Matthew L. Kersten, 37, of Rice Lake, and the train driver, Dale M. Merrell, 36, of Spooner, were not injured.

The crash happened just after 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, on Berglin Avenue, in Clark County, about 40 miles east of Chippewa Falls.

A 2002 Chrysler Concorde, driven by George P. Louis, 87, of Owen, attempted to cross the railroad, but was struck by a Canadian National Freight train. Louis was fatally injured. Alcohol was not a factor.

The crash was under investigation by the state patrol.
