A 55-year-old Rice Lake woman died in a crash with a school bus, said Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald on Wednesday morning, Nov. 21.
The woman was named as Joy Tew. Fitzgerald said Tew's vehicle crossed the center line and struck an Amery school bus, carrying the Amery girls basketball team. The crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, west of Rice Lake on Hwy. 48.
The team, of 22 students, four coaches and one bus driver, were treated and released at the scene. Tew was pronounced dead at the crash site.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, Fitzgerald said. Tew's vehicle was heading east and the bus was traveling west.
The crash was being investigated by the Barron County Sheriff's Department, Barron County Medical Examiner's Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol. The road, between Hwy. 25 and 16th Street (CTH V) was closed until around 3 a.m.
BCSD deputies, Rice Lake Fire, Barron Fire, Marshfield Medical Center Ambulance, Barron police, Rice Lake police also responded.
The bus was towed by S & R Towing, according to dispatch logs.
"I would like to thank all of our first responders that responded to this scene and assisted last night and a special thanks goes out to the Amery Girls team, coaches and parents who waited patiently with each other while everyone was checked out and reunited with family," Fitzgerald said. "As the busiest travel day of the year please take your time, buckle up and never drink and drive so you can get home to your family for this holiday season."
