The American Legion Post #179 in Chetek was initially named for Fred Whinfield Howard, who died of wounds in World War I, and Oliver Philip Campbell, who was killed in action in World War I.

The post received its permanent charter in April 1920.

On Nov. 9, 1944, Charles Ganske was added, with the name of the post becoming Howard-Campbell-Ganske Post #179.
