The tip of a 21-year-old man’s right middle finger was tore off and his right ring finger was broken after jumping into Lake Chetek near the sandbar on Wednesday, Aug. 7.
Alec Curran, of Chetek, had jumped feetfirst off the front of a pontoon around 7 p.m. that evening, into water that was 7 feet deep, recounted his mother, Michelle Curran, also of Chetek. She emailed a photo of her son’s injury to The Chetek Alert, but due to its graphic nature, we are refraining from printing it in the newspaper.
“He felt pain in his hand and when he pulled his hand out of the water, part of his finger was missing and he had broken bones in the finger beside it,” Curran wrote. “It is a mystery as to what was under the water that caused this.”
Curran said her son was near the sandbar, but he hasn’t been able to say exactly where. The tip of the finger was not recovered.
“Heard it could possibly be a turtle, but who knows?” Curran said.
They took Alec to Marshfield Medical Center in Rice Lake, and he was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Marshfield.
The partially amputated middle finger was closed up and doctors put screws in his broken ring finger. Michelle said he will return to the hospital on Friday, Aug. 16.
