A Chetek man was airlifted to Mayo hospital in Eau Claire with suspected severe injuries on Labor Day, Sept. 7, after the Dodge truck he was driving lost control on 24-1/8 Street and collided with a tree.

The crash was reported just after 4 p.m. on Sept. 7, in the 600 block of 24-1/8 Street, south of Chetek. Chetek Fire, Chetek Ambulance Service and Barron County Sheriff’s Department responded.

According to the crash report from the sheriff’s department, Joe G. Hrbacek, 37, of Chetek, was driving a Dodge pickup north on 24-1/8 Street when he lost control, went into the right ditch, then crossed over the road and went into the left ditch, striking a tree.

The report said Hrbacek was not using a seat belt, he was not ejected and the airbag deployed. Firefighters extracted him from the pickup and a Life Link III helicopter flew him to Eau Claire.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said speed was a factor in the crash. Citations including operating while revoked, license restriction violation-class D or M vehicle and failing to wear a seat belt were issued.

Blackjack Towing removed the pickup, which had extensive damage.
