An informational meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at the Chetek VFW to create a new, local AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Department of Wisconsin group in Chetek.
Nicole Slaney, of Chetek, is leading the initiative to start a local AMVETS Auxiliary, as the closest one to Chetek is in Stevens Point, Post No. 1051. She and her daughter, Cassie Elaine Slaney, who was the Wisconsin AMVETS White Clover Princess in 2016, are members of that auxiliary.
At least 10 members are required to start a new post. Nicole said Auxiliary will work with nursing homes and the veterans home in Chippewa Falls; make blankets, scarves and hats for veterans; work with schools and kids with coloring contests and scholarships; support the local AMVETS post; and work at AMVETS events.
The AMVETS is open to anyone who was honorably discharged from military service. The Ladies Auxiliary is open to any wife, widow, mother, grandmother, daughter, stepdaughter, granddaughter or sister of an AMVETS member or deceased veteran who would have been eligible for membership in AMVETS.
The annual membership fee is $25.
