The state’s frozen road declaration expanded to include Zone 2, along with Zone 1, which covers the northern half of the state.

The frozen road law allows heavier loads for trucks carrying logs cut crosswise (not including woodchips), and salt and sand for winter maintenance while cold weather allows.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation monitors road and weather conditions to see when the road base is frozen enough to handle heavier loads, from 80,000 pounds up to 98,000 pounds with at least five axles.

This only applies to state roads and roads and bridges without specified limits.

Find more information at the WisDOT’s website or call 608-266-8417 for current conditions.
