The elements made up for the dry spell in northern Wisconsin in grand style when torrential rains, amounting to 12 inches in some places in as many hours and totaling over 15 inches over a 36-hour period, brought rivers and creeks to roaring flood levels. … Four local nimrods fetched their old shooting irons and opened the skeet season on the river road range. They were George Carlson, Clarence Hoveland,  Harry Beckwith and Bill Campbell.

SIXTY-FIVE  YEARS AGO— September 1956

The Holten Finance Co., Inc. (Ed. Holten, Mgr.) and Attorney Byron Van Hollen this week moved into their separate offices in the new post office building. … Walt Bolenbaugh, proprietor of Bob’s Grill, this week started construction of a new building, just south of the present Bob’s Grill location on main street. The new building, much larger than the present location, will house the cafe and have two offices which will be for rent. … B. “Doc” Verhalen brought in a Heart of Gold cantaloupe which he raised in his garden. This specimen is as fine as could possibly be found any place in the country. … Members of the Chetek Women’s Golf Club concluded the season with a luncheon at Carter’s Cafe. Prizes at golf were won by Wanda Nichols, Anne Dewey and Virginia Lein.

FIFTY-FIVE YEARS AGO — September 1966

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Henning of Augusta, have purcahsed the Lakeshore Motel from the Carl Halversons, and with their sons Rick and Neal, will move to Chetek soon. Mr. and Mrs. Halverson have bought the Henning farm in Augusta and will move there when the Hennings move to Chetek. … Ole Severud, 26, of Dallas, is the new officer on duty in the City of Chetek, replacing John Nayes who resigned last week to accept a position at Dianne’s Supper Club. Mr. and Mrs. Severud plan to move to Chetek soon. … An unprecedented feat in this area occurred at the Ridgeland Fair when Chuck Schaaf’s teams won in all three weight classes in the horse pulling event.

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO —September 1976

New teachers at the Chetek schools this year are Renee Reed, Lorraine Gilbertson, Kathy Olson, Pat Fogarty, and Yaro Martyniuk. … Merri Ann Evenson, 10-year-old fifth grader at the Downtown Elementary School in Chetek, was killed instantly when she fell beneath the wheels of a school bus. … Marine Private David Hoard of Route 3, Chetek, has completed recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Calif. … Included on Northern Michigan’s Wildcats football team roster is Rod Crase, freshman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Crase of Chetek. … Reigning over the New Auburn Jamboree Days were Miss New Auburn Kelli Robey and Junior Miss New Auburn Lanae Neuenschwander.

FORTY YEARS AGO — September 1981

Miss Nancy Monke has moved into the parsonage at Chetek Lutheran this week to begin her year of “in-service” training as a seminary student at Luther-Northwestern Seminary, St. Paul. … CHS senior football players for the Bulldogs this year include Tom Schaaf, Scott Frisle, Steve Overby, Rich Robinson, Kelvin Gustum, Gary Taft, Joe Simon, Rod Rhodes, Brian Brady and Rod Hart. … The girls’ golf team began the season with victories over Hayward, Altoona and Bloomer, with four returning letter winners: Sandy Olson, Patty Olson, Luann Brady, Stacey Thomas.

Chetek Postmaster Joe Hills presented pins and letters of recognition to Arlie Borgen and Dick Rehberg for accumulating over 1,000 hours of sick leave each. … Leading the cheers for the Bulldog football team are Cindy Perry, Rachel Karns, Bill Mickelson, Dawn Hinrichs, Holly Sever and James Wehn. … New Auburn football cheerleaders are Janis Dachel, Angie Tremblay, Barbie Ertolacci, Missy Pitts and Kimberli Kramer. … LeRoy Kingsburg’s column, “The Art and Science of Living” begins this week in The Alert. …Rudy and Lu Richter of Chetek will observe their golden wedding anniversary with an open house.

Cellulink of Eau Claire announced the promotion and transfer of Lisa Bossany to corporate headquarters in Englewood, Colo. Lisa is the daughter of Joe and Gerry Bossany of Chetek. … Members of the Bob’s Grill team that captured the league championship are Jason Nicolai, Dave Cowley, Mark Larson, Corey Weisser, Chris Newkirk, Ken Elwood, John Martinson, Troy Morris, Dan Elwood and Brian Steffens.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO — September 1996

Returning as letter winners from last year’s volleyball team are Anne Etten, Jessica Finseth, Sarah Robarge and Whitney Turner. … The high school girls cross-country team has four returning letter winners from last year: Beth Davidge, Heather Follendorf, Angie Heppner and Keri Erb. The Chetek Lakes Protection Association sent a survey to lakeshore owners which will help guide water quality improvement projects. ... The state supreme court suspended a Chetek attorney’s license for violating the rules of professional conduct. ... The first round of underage alcohol compliance found 100-percent compliance in the county. ... A teen from Chetek and a teen from Barron were charged with breaking into and stealing items from two Rice Lake churches. The Chetek teen was also charged for breaking into two Dallas churches. ...
