Dennis DuBois, electronics technician seaman, USN, of Chetek, is serving aboard the Atlantic Fleet, submarine tender USS Howard W. Gilmore, operating out of Key West, Fla. … A haying bee was held at the Harold Anderson farm near Sand Creek to put in their year’s supply of hay. Those who assisted were Howard Hanson and Dennis, Art L. Anderson, Layton Hanson, Wallace Nelson, Gehard Gregarson, Joe Rathbun, Joe Carlson, Chas. Marik, Vernon Madison, Orvin Sparby, Clayton Saasted, and Art V. Anderson and Arne. … Jerry McAdow, Dale Novland and Robert Henderson, students from Chetek, visited the University of Wisconsin campus to register for studies to be started with the opening of the University’s school year. … Mrs. Marcella Krueger was the only teacher from Wisconsin selected to attend an academic year institute at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, financed by a grant from the National Science Foundation. She has taught mathematics in Chetek High School for many years.

FIFTY YEARS AGO—July 1969

Chetek Scoutmaster Gene Thalacker and Carl Osberg, of Chetek, are attending the seventh National Boy Scout Jamboree, being held at Farragut State Park in Idaho. … Mr. and Mrs. Joe Davis, of Alexandria, Ind., bought the Grand View Lodge in Chetek. The Lodge, which has been owned and operated by Steve and Lou Wallis since they purchased it from the Ing Hansens several years ago, will continue to be operated by them until it is closed this fall. … Rhonda Hembrook, of Chetek, is under contract with Henry Anderson Motors, of Chippewa Falls, to make a series of television commercials which can be seen on WEAU-TV. … Sgt. John Thalacker, who has been serving with the 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry, in Vietnam for the past 13 months, has returned to the United States.

FORTY YEARS AGO—July 1979

Lifeguards at the Chetek City Beach this season are Kathy Fostvedt, Teri Dewey, Anne Anderson and Mary Simon. Over 150 children were given swimming lessons by the instructors. … Ninety-eight runners entered the second annual Chetek Six-Mile Run last Saturday. Race officials were Bill and Judy Knickerbocker, Mikki Jerdet, Bev Sowinski, Elaine, Bob and Rod Crase, Jim Fults, Chet and Sandy Fraley and Andy Olson. … Maine Pvt. Randall Goodbout, of Dallas, has completed recruit training at the Marine Çorps Recruit Depot, in San Diego.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO—July 1984

Paul Johnson, D.D.S., a native of Chetek, has returned to the area to establish a family dental practice on the south side of Rice Lake. … The City Water Tower, a landmark in the Chetek area now for 80 years, is being torn down this week by a demolition crew from Hillsboro. A bronze plaque and a fire bell attached to the tower will be preserved and placed in the Calhoun Museum. … Eric Fjelstad, running in the age 14–15 group, placed seventh in the 10,000-meter run at the National Junior Olympics in Baton Rouge, La. … Army Pvt. Scott Bugella, of Chetek, has arrived for duty in Eschborn, West Germany, as a combat engineer with the 130th Engineer Brigade.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO—July 1994

Larry and Judy Stafsholt, originally from Eau Claire, purchased the Snug Harbor Resort, north of Chetek on CTH SS, from Norm and Char Gillette. … Barron County Highway Department crews resumed work this week after being pulled off the job temporarily last week when it was determined that the land they were working along CTH SS was labeled as virgin prairie land with native prairie grasses and wild flowers growing on it. … Douglas and Lois North will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in New Auburn on Aug. 13. … An open house will be held in honor of Al Gilberts’ 80th birthday at Chetek Lutheran Church on Aug. 7.

TWENTY YEARS AGO—July 1999

Plans are progressing for the possible addition of a park in downtown Chetek. Dr. Ivan Sletten, of Stillwater, Minn., who has strong ties to Chetek, has bought the lot adjacent to Ohde Pharmacy and has been working with the city to develop plans for a park. … Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen welcomed Chetek native Kacy Hack as a graphic artist for the Assembly Republican Caucus at the state Capitol in Madison. Kacy is a 1991 graduate of Chetek High School. … Army Reserve Sgt. Patricia Brown, of Chetek, participated in a training exercise in El Salvador. Brown is a practical nurse normally assigned at Fort Snelling, St. Paul, Minn. … The children of Kenneth and Betty Hoefs will host a celebration in honor of their parents’ 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 7.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO—July 2004

Chetek Rod & Gun Shop was burglarized for the second time in less than seven months. A pickup truck was also stolen from Chetek Marine. The vehicle was found along CTH SS near the railroad trestle over the Chetek River, but heavily vandalized. … A party was held on July 24, at Christ Lutheran Church in honor of Marvel Howard’s 90th birthday. … Friends and family of Wally and Alyce Gotham gathered at Knapp Haven to celebrate the couple’s 68th wedding anniversary on July 26. … Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert Lohse, of Chetek, has graduated from the Navy’s Nuclear Power School at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, Goose Creek, S.C. … Larry Gotham, of New Auburn, was awarded the Honorary State FFA Degree at the 75th annual Wisconsin FFA Convention.

TEN YEARS AGO—July 2009

The Chetek Chamber of Commerce has contracted with the Chetek youth band Arts & Crafts to perform for an outdoor concert on the city beach stage. The event is being held to show local recognition to the band for winning the statewide Launchpad grand prize. … At the recent Chetek School Board meeting, the board agreed to appoint Earl Grover, of Chetek, to fill a vacant seat for a year. … Twenty-six kayakers and canoeists participated in the third annual Ca-Run-Bi Triathlon, a Bulldog Booster Club event. The first-place team was Paul’s Angels, including Ryan Hetke, Paul Hetke, Travis Schwarzhuber and Kreg Ziarnik. … Pete Madland, of Chetek, representing the Tavern League of Wisconsin, threw the first pitch at Miller Park, featuring the Milwaukee Brewers and Atlanta Braves.
