The 47th annual Barron County Dairy Breakfast will be celebrated Saturday, June 4, at Wohlk’s Rainbow Valley Dairy north of Almena.
Serving is 6-11 a.m. on the farm, located at 1531 6 ½ St. (Hwy. P) just north of Almena. Admission is a freewill offering, with proceeds benefiting the Barron County Dairy Promoters organization. Â
On the menu is all-you-can-eat pancakes, with real maple syrup and butter, all-Wisconsin omelet, applesauce, deep-fried cheese curds, Culver’s frozen custard sundaes, milk and coffee.
Activities include children’s activities, horse- drawn wagon rides, antique tractors and machinery display, door prizes and self-guided farm tour.
Hosting the event is the Wohlk family. Clayton Wohlk, with wife, Becky, represent the fourth generation of ownership on the farm. Clayton purchased the farm’s 60 registered Holsteins from his parents Glen and Susan Wolhk this spring. Brother Kurt Wohlk is also involved in farm operations.
Christ Wohlk helped build the barn in 1919 and in 1926 purchased the farm. Calvin and Gilbert Wohlk, sons of Christ and Wilhelmina, built on the second half of the barn after logging their woods and sawing the lumber themselves. They also expanded the milk herd from 30 to 60 cows.
Today the Wohlks produce alfalfa, corn, soybeans and rye on 350 acres. They have been all no-till since 2000.
Rainbow Valley is also well-known for its sunflower field, which Kurt has been planting since 2017. Clayton also grows pumpkins and gourds for the fall season.
Kim Barta, of the Barron County Dairy Promoters, said they expect a big turnout at Rainbow Valley Dairy Farm. Volunteers are still needed. Call Barta at 715-418-1631 for more information.
