This 1940s Ford coupe was damaged in a rollover crash on CTH D, west of Chetek, on Saturday, Oct. 6. The driver was airlifted to Eau Claire with serious injuries. The damage to the middle of the car was apparently caused when it hit a power pole.

A 70-year-old Chetek man was severely injured and airlifted by helicopter after the vintage Ford he was driving crashed on CTH D on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said the driver was Wayne Muhonen, of Chetek. Muhonen had been returning to Chetek after showing his vintage 1940s Ford at the Dallas Oktoberfest.

The initial report suggested that the Ford failed to make the curve north on CTH D and it went into the ditch, overturning, striking and toppling an electric pole, eventually coming to rest about 75 yards off the roadway.

Muhonen was partially ejected, Fitzgerald said, and had sustained life-threatening injuries. A medical helicopter was paged and transported the man to the Mayo hospital in Eau Claire, according to dispatch records.

Fitzgerald said alcohol was a factor and the Wisconsin State Patrol was handling the OWI case, while the Barron County Sheriff’s Department was conducting the crash investigation.

A Marshfield Medical Center-Rice Lake ambulance, Chetek Fire Department, Barron County Sheriff’s Department and CCR Towing also responded to the scene.
