A 17-year-old male who was seriously injured when a horse-drawn buggy was rear-ended by a truck on Feb. 18, has died, according to the Barron County Sheriff’s Department.
The department was notified early Wednesday morning of the teen’s passing said Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald. The crash was being investigated by the BCSD and the case would be referred to the Barron County District Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
According to the initial investigation, the crash happened just before 6:44 p.m. on Feb. 18 on CTH M, near 30th Avenue, north of Rice Lake. A buggy with the 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, was traveling north on CTH M. The buggy had operating rear lights.
The truck, also traveling north on CTH M, struck the buggy. The 16-year-old had minor injuries and was transported to Marshfield Medical Center. The 17-year-old was airlifted from the scene in critical condition and was flown to Eau Claire. The truck driver was treated and released at the scene.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and we are grateful for all the community support they are receiving,” Fitzgerald said.
