Longtime owner of Erb Rural Bus Service, John Erb, of Chetek, passed away on Friday, Sept. 17. His company began providing transportation services to the Chetek School District in 1987, according to the school district. Erb Bus Service continues to provide services to the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Area School District.
CWASD Superintendent Mark Johnson said Erb was an amazing person that did much for the community.
“While I admired him for how effectively and efficiently he operated a tremendously complex role, I’ve always admired him more for who he was as a person,” said Johnson. “He was kind, caring and did far more for others than most people know.”
Erb donated bus services for the shuttle at Liberty Fest, said Jennifer Blatz, event organizer for the Chetek Area Chamber of Commerce. He also donated bus services when Chetek hosted the Wisconsin Indianhead Country Governor’s Fishing Opener in 2018, and for many other events over the years, Blatz noted.
“John was a very generous person. Always willing to help out,” said Blatz.
Johnson said Erb put others first without thought of credit for himself. “John’s contributions to our students, staff, district and community were tremendous. I consider myself fortunate to have known John, worked with John, and to consider him a friend. John is one of those people whose presence makes everyone better. He will be deeply missed by all,” Johnson added.
“For those that worked with Erb, he is remembered as a generous and community-minded individual who was always willing to help out,” Johnson said.
“I truly hope he knew how much he was appreciated. He will be missed,” Blatz said.
