If you live in Barron County, you should be very concerned about what is happening with our local government. Recently, I attended a very disturbing meeting of the Barron County Executive Committee.
Here are a few quotes from Chairman Okey for you to consider with regards to what some people had to say during the public comment time. You are “entrenched in what you believe.” The board is “just doing what the state told us what we have to do.” “We (the county’s elected supervisors) are getting your emails” but he went on to say that they don’t have to reply. Since when are elected officials not responsible or accountable to the people? And he refused to have any discussion about a town hall meeting saying it would be a “back-and-forth bitch session.”
Beyond that, I listened to a lot of information and watched one supervisor fall asleep during the meeting. And I do mean literally fall asleep; I have it on video.
Even after several people spoke requesting a town hall meeting, not one supervisor present was willing to bring this up as a future agenda item. This board clearly has no desire to represent the people.
The highlight of the day? A conversation with Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald after the meeting. He took time out of his busy day to talk with several of us. We may not agree on everything, but we appreciate that he was willing to communicate with us and listen to our concerns, which is far more than I can say for any member of the executive committee of our county.
