Laird “Larry” Joseph Toufar, 71, of Chetek, Wis., passed away Friday, May 3, 2019, at his residence with his loving wife and family by his side.
Larry was born Oct. 6, 1947, in Chippewa Falls, Wis., the son of Joseph and Mildred (Peterson) Toufar.
Larry grew up in rural Chetek, and after graduating from Chetek High School in 1965, he went to Racine, Wis., where he was employed at Standard Gray Iron & Ductile Foundry. He returned to Chetek in 1968, where he leased and operated Phetteplaces Twin Lakes Tavern. Later, he worked for Fred Komro at Chetek Motors as a salesman; owned and operated Lar’s Bar, in New Auburn, Wis.; and was a bartender at Chetek Lanes and Brass Rail Bar. He was a longtime salesman at Southworth Chevrolet in Bloomer, Wis., working with his wife, Kim, who was a car detailer there. Larry was forced to retire when his health was failing him.
Larry was united in marriage to the love of his life, Kim Wasko. They had a double marriage along with her sister, Alice, and her husband, James Waskey, in Las Vegas, Nev., on Jan. 31, 1999, during halftime of Super Bowl XXXIII. Larry loved flowers, hanging out at their cabin in the woods, playing pool and having a “cold and delicious” (aka beer), four-wheeling, fishing, Canada trips, telling jokes and funny stories every day, and was an avid Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers fan. He will be missed dearly by everyone who knew him.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Kim; daughter Heather Lubben; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers Tom Toufar and Robert Janota, of Rice Lake, Wis., Rollin (Mary) Janota, of Bloomer, Arthur (Dorothy) Janota, of West St. Paul, Minn., and Dale (Michele) Janota, of Gillette, Wyo.; sisters Jolene (Gene) Kowalski, of Rockton, Ill., and Shirley Janota, of Atlanta, Ga.; and sister-in-law Beverly Janota, of Sturtevant, Wis.; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and hundreds of friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Oscar and Emma Peterson, and Joseph and Cecelia Toufar; parents Joseph Toufar and Mildred Janota; stepfather Charles Janota; and one brother, Elroy Janota.
