Mara Anne Hoffner, passed away suddenly on Sunday, May 2, 2021. She was 13 years old.
Mara was born Aug. 3, 2007, in Vermillion, S.D., to Todd and Melodee (Rockwood) Hoffner.
She was a vibrant, smart and tenacious young lady who loved her parents, her sister, brother, and her dog, Maverick, with all of her heart. She greatly enjoyed family time, especially watching the Mankato State football games since she was a baby. She loved downhill skiing, boating and jet skiing. She was passionate about the outdoors, campfires and especially being on the lake whether it was to the family camper on Madison Lake or in Chetek, Wis., for the Fourth of July Liberty Fest, an extended family tradition each year.
Mara was a fierce competitor playing cards with family and friends alike especially at the Hoffner family farm in Esmond, N.D. Mara was fun-loving, had a trickster spirit, and her bright light brought joy and happiness to everyone she encountered. Mara enjoyed spending time with her friends and her extraordinary number of cousins.
Throughout her life, she participated in gymnastics, swimming, soccer, plays and recently picked up the guitar. As a seventh-grader, she competitively participated on the Mankato East Diving Team. When she was in elementary school, she wanted to be a counselor and had a great desire to help people. She wanted to “work with people to help them solve their problems and feel better” because her abilities and talents included “cheering people up, always being happy, caring and kind.” She will be deeply missed by her parents, family and friends.
Mara is survived by her parents, Todd and Melodee Hoffner; sister, Kiaya Hoffner; brother, Brady Hoffner, all of Eagle Lake, Minn.; paternal grandparents, Leo and Arlene Hoffner, of Esmond, N.D.; maternal grandfather, Richard Rockwood, of Meridian, Idaho; aunts and uncles, Dan and Sharon Rockwood, of Menomonie, Cathie and Guy Gilbert, of Barron, Christie Silva, of Eau Claire, Curt and Marie Rockwood, of Nampa, Idaho, Jennifer and Ed Schofield, of Chetek, Travis Rockwood, of Nampa, Idaho, Elizabeth Smith, of Saint Paul, Minn., Sarah Rockwood, of Saint Paul, Minn., Melinda and Richard Rodriguez of Houston, Texas, Bernie and Vern Roller, of Bismarck, N.D., Terry and Tracy Hoffner, of Algona, Wash., Jady and Karla Hoffner, of Fargo, N.D., Karen Hoffner, of Maddock, N.D.; and an extraordinary amount of cousins.
