Wrestling in their first multi-team competition of the season, the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm wrestling team was handed three losses as the Bulldogs (0-6, 0-3) were defeated by Amery, Cameron and St. Croix Central in a quad held at Amery on Thursday, Jan. 7. C-W/PF saw strong competition at the four-team dual and scored just 18 points in three matches.
The ‘Dogs started the night wrestling against the hometown Amery Warriors and were blanked 81-0. Thirty of the 81 points came from forfeits by C-W/PF in five different weight classes. However, out of the nine matches, Amery won eight of those by pinfall—all pins came in less than 80 seconds as well.
C-W/PF’s Justin Fowler (132 pounds) was the lone Bulldog to wrestle all three periods, but was defeated by Amery’s Joseph Wentz by a score of 5-0.
It was a similar story for the Bulldogs in the second match of the evening as Heart O’North rival Cameron downed the ‘Dogs 56-6. Despite the loss, C-W/PF wrestled better as many of the matches went into periods two and three.
The Comets rattled off 42 consecutive points to start the match with one forfeit win and pins against C-W/PF’s Tucker Clemetson (138 pounds), Kyle Jarmusic (145 pounds), Alexander Campbell (152 pounds), Josh Konvicka (160 pounds), Thor Sather (182 pounds) and Noah Bradley (220 pounds).
The Bulldogs finally got on the board when Dawson Kflefstad earned a victory by forfeit in the 106-pound weight class.
Trailing 42-6, McKensie Clemetson (120 pounds) gave a valient effort in her match against the Comets’ Jesse Slayton, but was edged by Slayton 16-9.
At 132 pounds, Cameron’s Tanner Gerber downed Fowler by technical fall, winning 18-3.
In their final match of the night, the ‘Dogs dug themselves a 45-0 hole against St. Croix Central, eventually losing 69-12.
Highlights from this match included a pin by C-W/PF’s Klefstad, who won the 106-pound match over Adam Madlung in 1:37. Also picking up a win by pinfall was Fowler in the 132-pound weight class. Fowler won the back-and-forth match against Eli Ponath in 3:53.
“Dawson (Klefstad) wrestled a great match beating a state-ranked St. Croix Central wrestler. He had a very competitive match until he finally wore his opponent out to score a fall. Justin also had a very competitive night at Amery. I could see all four wrestlers (Fowler and his three opponents at Amery) in the state tournament in the 132-pound class. Justin won his match against SCC and fought hard in his other two matches,” stated C-W/PF head coach Chad Olson.
C-W/PF will wrestle in their second multi-dual match of the season when they head to Osceola to wrestle the hometown Chieftains, as well as St. Croix Falls and New Richmond on Thursday, Jan. 14.
